rec for life

i feel physically ill. my stomach is in knots, all because of a softball game. i'm sleepy and i want to take a nap in the "nap room", but i'm too wired. i probably couldn't eat anything if i tried. to make matters worse, i'm hitting second.

je ne suis pas un athlete. duh!

*edit
-so I stopped feeling nauseous after talking to the team's coach. he wondered why i was nervous as he totally expected to lose (we played the division leaders). i still managed to suck royally on offense, stranding a couple of runners. i also had to buy a pitcher of beer afterwards because i struck out-the only one to do so. at least i wasn't horrible on defense. oh, ego, how thou art bruised.

captain's log, stardate 6-24-05

last night was my first official foray into Yuppiedom with $2 dollar drinks at Schmooze After Work Fridays with some coworkers. I was actually pretty stressed out about it, some reasons being I can't "schmooze" for my life, group situations make me nervous as I feel more comfortable with the one-on-one, and there was only one other proofreader asked to come. Everyone else was from DTC, IT or marketing I think. To make things worse, I had to lug around a behemoth of a manuscript to finish on the weekend and traverse dtown in heels and on an empty stomach (non-eating due to nervousness).

Luckily I met up with team Harlequin at the door and you know what, the Schmooze-ing was absolutely fine. the people I was with are super nice and conversation was easy. Topics ranged from softball woes to Russell Peters to fake medical afflictions. SUCCESS!! Schmooze also has a really nice rooftop patio, marred only by the congregating smokers (sigh). I also managed to ward off the Asian reds till I left and checked myself out in the washroom at Chapters, where upon seeing at my reflection, I became quite frightened.

As for Yuppiedom itself... it was really fun to get dressed up (it's good to be a girl) and i had such a good time chilling with people from work ... but up close, Yuppiedom isn't all that attractive. It felt like something was definitely lacking in the room of people. This is not to say all Yuppies' lifestyles are big on style and short on substance, but it doesn't feel full enough for me. It's funny because I've sort of been attracted to Yuppiedom since I was a teenager, but now, standing at the threshold of a possible IKEA-beige lifestyle, I kind of want to run screaming into the hills of a lush green Malaysian jungle.

strike one

oh

my

LANTA.

i've become one of those women. the ones who read romance novels on the bus.

i can't believe I was reading the darn book*!! lines are blurring, worlds are colliding... work naomi is meshing with outside naomi. agh agh agh agh. hopefully this was a momentary lapse in judgement due to a rain-soaked brain and lack of kimchi ramen which is inexcusable considering for the first time in my life i have a stack of unread books waiting for me at home. The stack includes: Mere Christianity by CS Lewis; 100 Love Sonnets by Pablo Neruda; Last Night a DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster; Forever Summer by Nigella Lawson. sigh.

i definitely want to read these too:
1. Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl
2. Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman
3. 31 Songs by Nick Hornby
4. All That Matters by Wayson Choy
5. The In-Between World of Vikram Lall by MG Vassanji
6. Harry Potter 6: The Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling
7. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
8. Residence on Earth by Pablo Neruda

wow this is sad. hardly any female writers. booooo me.

and hey, did you know masterpiece theatre aired a TV movie adaptation of Zadie Smith's awesome book, White Teeth? i totally want to see this!

*i only had the book because i was giving it to a friend who requested a read for her trip (i get free books from work). that's the only reason why. i SWEAR it.

feeling a little bit nervy

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE L O V E!!!

-SO tired this weekend. am not adjusting to humidity as well as i thought i could. however, rain and a nerve-wracking but awesome softball game may contribute to loss of lethargy.

-competitive sports make me stressed (in a good way). in today's game, we were leading 8-7, bottom of the last inning. the downpour has stopped, and everything is eerily quiet. we just need one more out. i've already botched a play at first due to shaking, nervy hands, and i almost start erupting in nervous, anxiety-ridden giggling-a nice complement to the trembling digits. we won in the end, and i actually got the girl MVP nod, but still... stressed OUT.

this reminds me of the time during our group final for dragonboat at the waterloo festival. it's like the last 20 metres or so, the cox, gary, is screaming so hard for us to "PUSH PUSH PUSH!!!!!!!! STROOOOOOOKE!!!!!!!! KEEP ON PADDDDDLLLLLIIINNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" he sounded like a psychotic lamaze instructor. i'm in the back, so nervous for the outcome because i can see the neighbouring boat gaining, maybe overtaking us... I lose control and start giggling like a madwoman at gary's fervour, which makes me almost lose my paddle in the water. aaagh.

-Simpsons' "Goo Goo Gai Pan" episode:
Homer (to Chinese official): You're Communists?? But why do I see rudimentary free markets??

-favourite pictures of late:

taken by travis ruse. i love magic time on the train. ah. some of my favourite pictures from japan are my b&w subway train/station ones. but did you know NYC's MTA is trying to outlaw taking pictures on the subway because of terrorist fears. Zut alors! that would stink the big one. hopefully the ban will be lifted ASAP.

what you lookin' at willis??

Lesson #1: even though it's a bit tough waking up so early, sometimes the earliest option is the best option...

especially when it means a not-so-crowded ferry ride...

and a relatively short lineup for the FREE breakfast! wooowoooooo!

elements softball is winning over work softball so far. pourquoi?

1. elements are a more colour coordinated bunch

2. they are very photogenic at dusk

3. like to adopt random poses

4. and finally, come complete with their very own cheer squad!

i now give you...

dog at rest

bright lights, big stage

this is thing about the Tony Awards. everytime I watch it, i am filled with the desire to watch nothing but genius musicals every day for the rest of my life. heck, i want my life to be a musical.

i really want to see:

Pacific Overture

it's not playing anymore but he-ey! music by SONDHEIM!! and that's right folks, that's BD Wong in the front =)

Light in the Piazza

it looks really beautiful and romantic. but sharon, i still think your sister is crazy. Tony winner for best Actress in a musical as well as best Orchestration.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

this looks so funny, and i can re-live elementary school glory if i see this =) A whole bunch of Tonys including best Actor in a musical.

(not a musical, but still on my Broadway wish list)

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

I am, I am! Especially if Kathleen Turner is in it! I read this a while ago, and really enjoyed it. the film version with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton is a bit tough to handle, just because they so skillfully hurtle Albee's lines at each other with such malice and contempt it hurts to watch (but in a good way).

can you distinguish miles from coltrane?

not sure if i can. yet.

but it's definitely on my to-do-in-the-foreseeable-future list. a list which i am making some headway in... passed G1-again (sigh), playing CCSA Seniors, signed up with TESSC instead of NTUC, half-organized b&w pictures, participated in one toronto HfH build (more to come!), and ran my first 10K race...

who runs this town?

duh! Markham, North York and Koreatown!

i'm definitely going to run CAMH's Run for Recovery, which will help alleviate any residual guilt due to participation in the Nike run o.0 (though i must say, I'm really glad the registration fees from RunTO are going towards building the complex in Malvern). It was a tough but fun run, and i cycled through a gamut of emotional states: excitement, sleepiness, anxiety, impatience, distress, surprise, fatigue, despondency, renewal, joy, hunger, fatigue, joy, fatigue, joy, calm, fatigue, joy. but heck, the amount of endorphins i had afterwards was worth it! hehe.

also, beef jerky is quite enjoyable! especially when it's FREE.

i quite like the direction most of the fashion trends are heading: that old-school yet down-to-earth glamour/prettiness. it's GOOD to be a girl. mmmm, ballet flats! full skirts! grosgrain and seersucker! monique l'huillier's bridal and ready to wear collections are GORGEOUS. check out her fall 2005 ready to wear, and spring 2005 bridal. really simple and beeyootiful lines.

i should really do some work.
