i would move heaven and earth to be together forever...

ever wonder what happened to that nerdy but cute guy you sat beside in gr 9 geography?

well, i have no clue.

but if you've been wondering where one of the late eighties' GREATEST pop stars has gone to, i can help you out!

Rick Astley arrived on the mainstream pop scene in stellar fashion. His debut single, "Never Gonna Give You Up" was the biggest selling single on the British pop charts in 1987. He followed with a foray into holiday music and other albums, including the smash hit "Together Forever" which also topped the US charts.

"You wouldn’t get this from any other guy"

His two hit singles are effervescent and saccharine-sweet pop at its best. His soft and blurry tenor voice, anchored by classic 80s percussion construction, make his hit songs-especially "Together Forever"-undeniably catchy; they ooze neon-sharkskin suit-sparkling-80s nostalgia. I dare you to put this song on and not have at least one of your extremeties twist and shout.

"Here we are
Riding high
We’ve come so far
We can touch the sky"

He became known for his pretty-boy image, but wanted to be taken seriously as a songwriter so split with his production partners after the release of his second album. It was rumoured that he could not handle the fame and limelight and as thusly, retreated from the spotlight to settle down and raise a family.

"Got to understand
Life is what you make it baby
No time to sit around"

But fear not Astley-heads!

Rick has been working on a comeback! In 2004 he was part of a sold-out UK tour, and is scheduled to release a new studio album in September 2005 with Sony.

Can he recapture former glory with this new album? Patience fellow Astley-heads! We'll soon find out...

"I’ll never let you down
I’ll be there whenever you need me
I’ll never let you down"

ps: beware fake Astleys. Hold out for the real thing.

fake Astley

real Astley

"You know that I’m always with you
You know that I’m by your side
You know that I’m always with you
In body and soul, body and soul"

synapes have stopped firing?

WHAT??? okay, so i'm reading the intro of a new "Intimate Moments" book, and the opening scene details a drive-by in Spanish Harlem ('exotic locale' i think to myself after dredging through volumes of Mills & Boon's highly Eurocentric epistles). Oooh, urban, gritty, torrid romance on the horizon? The heroine has been injured by stray bullets and then seeks refuge in a neighbour's botanica. She looks in the mirror to check out what I assume to be life-threatening injuries...

alas, she can't see anything because...

SHE'S A VAMPIRE!!! what the heck!? Intimate Moments series=vampires?

"Audrey was in bed when the call came from her longtime vampire friend, Diego."

sigh. should be a fun read

come away with me

retreat was really fun. i felt kind of like an imposter before i even got there though. i told people at work i was heading "up north" when in reality it's just stouffville-my old neighbourhood and 20 minutes from my house... hah! workmates were actually heading north of stouffville sideroad to algonquin-ish areas hahaha. and then when i finally got there... i was ta-dah! Official Adult!! no longer a YP, yet interacting with the YP like they were my peers. good thing i really like them or i would've had a major identity crisis =)

anyways, my first stint as kitchen captain on saturday was awesome thanks to Jen and Debbie's amazing Food Binder (how it saved me countless times). if YP wants to hire me again, i'll volunteer for sure! cheers to punctual breakfast #1, endless slices of puff pastry, mashed potato and spinach mountains, a whole stinkin' load of bacon, 12am honey garlic wings, and the gargantuan Fridge of Leftovers.

fave pics from the weekend:

Sc-hottie's team surrendering to spinach and pasta shells (so GOOD btw)

"this is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth..." Sempai and kohai dynamics at work

i love andy's expression =)

and Luke the speaker confirmed what I already know: actions mean more than words. Luke 5:12-16

[12] While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."[13] Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" And immediately the leprosy left him.[14] Then Jesus ordered him, "Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."[15] Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. [16] But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

also, i managed to hit myself in the nose with a frisbee and am convinced it will start bruising at any minute. egh.

what do we have in common

1 thing: JM and Common together at last.

i'm a happy girl.

forget the harajuku girls

this t-shirt is awesome. it's awesome cuz it's true =) who else would you want to step up for you? say you unfortunately get involved in some antics... and suddenly, some toughies from the wrong side of the tracks want to replace and displace your face. who are you gonna call? Ghostbusters? nah, that ectoplasm stuff will only discourage hooliganism for a short while. dude, call out your hombre Jesus, the 3-for-1 Love-for-all-creatures-Teacher feature!

i saw some of the Teenage Millionaire line in osaka but didn't get one at the time... probably during that period where i was trying to wean myself off of t-shirts. alas. an exercise in futility.

the whole reason behind the E

curious as to why the Seniors team has the logo that they do? (which, i would like to add on the record, i was in favour of, over the McElements one. I just liked the possibility of "do do do doo do, we're loving Him" as a team cheer. Now it looks like we'll have to fashion a team cheer out of the Captain Planet and the Planeteers song)

...the official JGCT Elements website.

i had to stifle several chortles at work, which is a lot harder to do than one would think.

ps: I AM NOT A DICTATOR!!!!!

i have "bulletproof" by blue rodeo stuck in my head

and it's only Tuesday.

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh. it's been a long day so far.

i want to know (are you in the know?)

1.koko niisshoni ikouka? (may 27 dake)
2. is there any advantage to having an flat asian bottom?? click here for some encouragement my fellow yellows.
3. what happened to cdn politicos' sense of integrity? apparently, federal leaders opted out of the veteran's 60th anniversary VE trip to holland to prevent opposition leaders from concocting any moves that could bring down the Liberal minority gov't. instead they kept close to home, attending ceremonies in ottawa, where they could keep a close eye on each other. RIDICULOUS.
4. i kind of understand the whole 'cult'-like atmosphere of the running room now. i will seriously consider walking barefoot on hot tar as an alternative to running on my own (esp. on a treadmill). how did this happen?!

at the marquee, heavy glow

the rachael yamagata and ryan adams concert was kind of bizarre-in an off-kilter-jet-lagged sort of way. it started out promisingly enough-vegetarian supreme pita from Fit For Life for dinner, being super punctual at the rendezvous point, and entering the line early enough, so if seen from afar, we could be considered part of the 'devoted'.

there's not really much to say about the concert-which is pretty sad-other than these few items:

1. PRE-CONCERT: there was an abundance of boy-man hipsters there with their female high-school counterparts, which sucked most of the joviality out of the waiting-in-line experience. when pressed, one such member said the opening act was "...uh...like.. kristi ...rachel.. yamaguchi?" under normal circumstances, i wouldn't expect people to know the name of the opening act. however as this was not a normal situation-i was here to see the opening act, and had little to no interest in the headliner, except for the fact that he could possibly throw a hissy fit if a patron asked him to play "SUMMER OF '69!!!"-my hackles were shur risin' up.
2. AUDIENCE: we managed to squeeze into the second row... right behind 4 boy-men, whom i have now named, The Professor (a bespectacled manic Adams fan), Spliff (started smoking up right in front of the security guard, shielded only by The Prof's legs), Fro-boy (self-explanatory) and Rich (looked so much like Rich E from band, it was freaky). They looked like ghosts of Stouffville past, which was downright unsettling. I wondered why there were so many guys-wasn't Ryan Adams a folk-country-rocker? I didn't think hipsters went for alt-country balladeers, especially ones from Stouffville. Apparently I know nothing about the tastes of young people. These guys were rabid for Mr Adams' music.
3. ETIQUETTE: During Rachael Yamagata's set, which was cool (she had a cellist with her! and her voice sounds so amazing live), all you could hear was this infernal buzzing and ambient noise from the back because of the excessive amount of audience chatter. How RUDE. I bet she could've rocked out even more if the audience wasn't so LAME. unforgivable man.
4. PERFORMANCE: Rachael was great. And Ryan was...well... let's just say this: It takes a special guy to command such dedication from alpha males to the point they're shouting their affection and thanks to Mr Adams for playing really average and sometimes boring music. His second set took FOREVER. i wanted to scream. and this is coming from someone whose first response to any guy playing acoustic guitar is "be still my beating heart."

he's like the ben affleck of alt-country...but weirder.

to be fair, there were one or two songs that caught the ear...but was it really that underwhelming? i really had to force myself to pay close attention, trying to find something redeemable. was i really checking my watch repeatedly? how could I not like alt-country?! gah.

thanks to the Tam sisters for trekking down with me, and for stifling most of their yawns during the concert. =)
