cheers

today is my parents' thirtieth wedding anniversary. this is the first time i've celebrated their anniversary with them since they are not sticklers for these kinds of signifiers of time (except for birthdays, and even then, i feel they are a bit loosey-goosey). so it's no surprise that just a few weeks before the actual date, neither of them knew when they had actually gotten married. finally, my mom found the small gray bible that the japanese united church minister had given to them on their wedding day, and, finally, we secured a date.

i asked my parents how they managed to stay married for so long; i know getting married and staying married are two entirely different things. my mom gave a rambling answer involving themes of respect and duty. my dad approached it from another angle, choosing to lightly lecture the young people of today regarding their general impatience with things. their answers felt kind of incomplete, but i think it was appropriate because maybe they haven't totally figured it out, and they aren't supposed to figure it out for me. in the end, i am grateful beyond all measure to have their marriage as an example to live up to. Of course it wasn't and isn't perfect, but what i see between them is something i really want and will work for if i ever get married.

and so to everyone who is getting married this season, and to those who are already married, I pray that you continue to respect your spouse, have patience with each other especially in the rough parts, and above all, share and grow your love for one another.

three cheers!
